This is my review of the Epson SureColor P5370 17-Inch Professional
Photographic Printer after owning it for over a year. In summary:
Beware! Do not buy the Epson SureColor P5370 17-Inch Professional
Photographic Printer
Why is the Epson SureColor P5370 so awful?
Reason #1
The Epson SureColor P5370 has encrypted ink chips on the ink cartridges
that cannot be reset. This means that you cannot refill ink cartridges on
the Epson P5370 or similar models. You are forced to buy Epson-branded ink
which is egregiously overpriced.
Chip resetters do not work! The below chip resetter was bought on Amazon.
The seller promised that it would work on the Epson P5370 ink chips and
that was not true. The ink chips are encrypted and cannot be reset.
See below, on eBay you can buy 10 liters of Epson ink for $800, which
comes to $80 per liter. However, that's not an option anymore so
you're stuck with Epson-brand ink which is $110 for 200ml, or $550
per liter! At $550 per liter you are not making money owning an Epson
printer. You are working for Epson!
The older Epson P5000 did not have encrypted chips, meaning that you could
use an ink chip resetter. Those days are over, Epson has turned ink sales
into a bigger profit center than the printers themselves.
Reason #2
Awful print quality. The below graphic is on a 1mm paperboard at best
quality and +20% ink saturation. The lines are still fuzzy even though the
artwork is vector (Printed from Adobe Illustrator). We played around with
the platen gap distance with no improvements no matter the setting.
The
ink usage is outrageous, the 200ml Epson T55V ink cartridges drain fast
and are expensive at $110ea. We use around $10/ink printing these 17"
x 22" boards. The problem is that we sell them at around $30ea which
means that Epson takes home 33% of the sales revenue. If you could source
your own ink, your cost would be $80/L instead of $550/L. For this
particular project, our ink cost should be $1.45 instead of $10 per board,
but unfortunately you cannot source your own ink with this printer.
Did I mention that Epson disabled the ink counter / ink usage meter in
their desktop software? They don't want you knowing your cost per
print anymore :O) how convenient.
Reason #3
Filthy print head and print carriage. The print head needs constant
cleaning because it gets caked in ink that sprays and drips all over your
graphics. If your customer needs a single print, you will end up printing
3-4 prints and possibly 1-2 head cleanings. You will need to manually
access the capping station to constantly wipe it clean. This is the
messiest, nastiest print reservoir and capping station you will ever work
with. On top of that, head cleaning uses a lot of ink which is
outrageously expensive as ink is $550/L.
Reason #4
Absurd 10-color system. Why on earth do you need 10 ink colors? I'll
tell you exactly why, because to refill all 10 inks, the total cost is
$110ea color or $1,100 total! Epson has designed this printer to bring
them more money in ink sales than selling the printers themselves. At
$2,000 per Epson P5370, you'll pay more for ink in only two refills.
Anyone with industry knowledge knows that you get awesome prints with the
classic 4-color system of CMYK. 10 colors is hilariously outrageous and
totally unnecessary. It wasn't invented to make the world a better
place, Epson created it to make more money and poison the industry.
In summary:
Do not purchase the Epson SureColor P5370! Also known as the SC-P5370 or
P-Series Epson Printer. The ink is outrageously expensive, the print
quality is bad, the messy print head will ruin your prints, and the
10-color system prints worse than traditional 4-color CMYK printers.
